El hipertiroidismo es una forma de tirotoxicosis debido a un aumento en la síntesis y secreción de hormonas tiroideas, su causa más frecuente es la enfermedad de Graves. La plasmaféresis puede ser indicada en pacientes con tirotoxicosis refractaria al tratamiento convencional o cuando existen contraindicaciones para el mismo como puente a la tiroidectomía. Se presenta el caso de un paciente masculino con reciente diagnóstico de enfermedad de Graves, en el cual por alteraciones hematológicas y compromiso hemodinámico se realizó plasmaféresis como puente a la tiroidectomía.
Hyperthyroidism is a form of thyrotoxicosis due to an increase in thyroid hormones synthesis and secretion; its most frequent cause is Graves’ disease. Plasmapheresis may be indicated in patients with thyrotoxicosis refractory to conventional treatment or when there are contraindications for it as a bridge to thyroidectomy. We present a case of a male patient with Graves’ disease in which because of hematological alterations and hemodynamic compromise we decided to initiate plasmapheresis and subsequently performed a thyroidectomy achieving healing. In urgent cases it must be started without delay since it is the fastest known method to decrease peripheral hormones.
